Recently, Mandy Len Catron wrote an essay called “To Fall In Love With Anyone, Do This.” Putting a study done by psychologist Arthur Aron (et. all) to the test, she claimed that having had this exchange with a date, the ‘formula’ for developing radical empathy does indeed connect you to… really anyone. The science of what makes someone “right” for us is budding, albeit not entirely uncharted, and seems to be going mainstream.

For the sake of (even Mandy’s admission) that the results of her mini-experiment have untold and unaccounted for variables, I took the creative liberty of shifting “falling in love with anyone” to “seeing if there’s a love to be fostered between two people.” Science abiding or not, I think it’s interesting to see what lies at the core of human vulnerability.
